JUNIOR CHEF COMPETITION

Chester Food, Drink and Lifestyle Festival has teamed up with Love Food Hate Waste to run a Junior Cookery competition. 142 schools across Chester and Cheshire West have been invited to take part in this exciting competition, which will involve every school child in the region between 8 and 11 years of age.

The competition aims to show children the importance of using local produce where possible as well as looking at ways in which food waste can be reduced. In the UK, 8.3 million tonnes of food is thrown away by households every year, and wasting food costs the average family with children £680 a year as well as having serious environmental implications too.

To highlight these issues, Chester Food, Drink and Lifestyle Festivalhas teamed up with Love Food Hate Waste – the national campaign that looks at ways in which people can reduce their food waste within the home - to run this exciting competition. Love Food Hate Waste is an excellent source for material when teaching children how to reduce waste as well as being an inspirational site for projects and recipes.

The Chester Food, Drink and Lifestyle Festival Junior Chef Competition is aimed at three year categories, years 4, 5 and 6 and will ask the children to produce a recipe that they have created themselves using local produce and from leftovers they have found in their family fridge.

This competition can be used as part of many school projects to highlight where food comes from, how to cook on a budget, how foods can be combined to create delicious meals and as a way of introducing different foods to a child’s usual weekly menu they may not have eaten before.

Competition winners will be judged on originality of the recipe, an understanding and use of healthy food, and of course – its appeal

Schools are asked to send in their entries by 26th February 2010 to Junior Chef Competition, Concorde House, 6 Canal Street, Chester CH1 4EJ. From all of the entries, 10 children from each category will be picked to have their recipes cooked by Love Food Hate Waste chef, Richard Fox at the Taste Chester in April. At the end of the festival, a winner from each category will be picked and will win an exciting prize and the title of Chester Food, Drink and Lifestyle Festival Junior Chef 2010.
